The New York Yankees acquired INF Luis Garcia Jr from the Washington Nationals in exchange for four right-handed pitchers, the teams announced Sunday. 

The Nationals received Yovanny Cruz, Jake Bird, Ben Grable, and Jack Cebert in the deal. 

“He rakes,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told ESPN of Garcia hearing upon the trade. “He can really hit.” 

Garcia’s 18 home runs since June 1st are second in the majors behind Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies. 

The Nats had already shown their willingness to trade away position players for pitchers when they traded INF Curtis Mead to the Boston Red Sox for LHP Connelly Early. 

“I mean it’s a mix in between sad and happy,” Garcia told ESPN about leaving the Nationals after 7 seasons. “Ther’s a new chapter in my career, so yeah, 50-50 right now.” 

On Sunday, the Nats added several arms to the mix. 

Cruz, (26), debuted with the Yankees this season, allowing 1 earned run in 51/3 innings across 4 outings and striking out six. Bird, (30), was acquired at the deadline last season from the Colorado Rockies. Bird struggled with New York, finishing up his time there with a 7.24 ERA in 39 outings. 

Grable, (24), is a reliever with a 2.45 ERA in 32 appearances between High-A and Double-A this season. He represented the Yankees in the Futures Game last month. Cebert, (24), has a 4.68 ERA in 16 outings (14 starts) between High-A and Double-A.
